Un passo importante nella configurazione del proprio Cloud Server è la scelta del Sistema Operativo.
Ovviamente nella scelta del Sistema Operativo è fondamentale la destinazione d'uso del Cloud Server e le competenze specifiche verso un determinato S.O. e/o versione. Qualora si voglia installare nella propria macchina virtuale una determinata o specifica applicazione, è bene consultare in anticipo il fornitore dell'applicazione, per scegliere la versione di Sistema Operativo più adatta all'applicazione stessa.
Si tenga conto di tutti i parametri possibili per effettuare tale scelta, in quanto come nel caso degli Hypervisor, non è possibile modificare il Sistema Operativo di una macchina virtuale una volta creata.

Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection oltre ad essere un potente antivirus, antispam e antimalware, è anche un efficace sistema centralizzato di protezione, valido a partire dalla singola macchina virtuale fino all'intera rete virtuale.
I prodotti Microsoft Forefront consentono di proteggere i Cloud Server, le applicazioni server e la rete perimetrale, il tutto con un bassissimo impatto sulle prestazioni del sistema e della rete.
Microsoft Forefront ti permette di monitorare in tempo reale lo stato della sicurezza del sistema operativo, inoltre offre la possibilità di configurare avvisi per attività di virus, controllare i tempi di inattività firewall, registrare gli errori di aggiornamento.
La gestione centralizzata di Microsoft Forefront fa risparmiare in quanto permette di eliminare le spese di acquisto e di mantenimento di un'infrastruttura di sicurezza indipendente.

template/OS personalizzato oppure più semplicemente optare per un template fra quelli disponibili:
